Approaches to the SDGs and nutrition education from the perspective of nutrition

JSPEN is the Japanese Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism and is one of the largest nutrition-related societies in Japan with more than 23,000 members, comprising doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, physiotherapists, speech therapists and many other medical staff.

I was invited to speak at the symposium on the excellent theme of ‘The SDGs from the perspective of nutrition – approaches to nutrition education’.

The main focus was on the three nutrition education classes at Kurosaki Primary School in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, which were conducted as part of the Expo’s Tokushima Attractiveness Challenge Project,

The talk included a talk on ‘Nutrition education activities for building sustainable food habits that are friendly to the earth and people’, as well as the cultivation and harvesting of pesticide-free rice, ethical consumption and advice on food habits.

Health literacy was also a theme. Health literacy is the ability to read and understand health-related information, use it to make decisions and take appropriate health action. There is a lot of information on nutrition and diet, but I thought it was important to learn how to find the right information and link it to health, while having fun and “experiencing” it.

The time will come when the high potential of dietitians and nutritionists will be demonstrated by promoting nutrition education in relation to the SDGs. And to realise this, teamwork with multiple industries will undoubtedly become important.

I have high expectations for the future trend of nutrition education and would like to continue to promote the activities I am currently carrying out.
